Autogenic Therapy FAQs
Q: What is Autogenic Therapy?
A: Autogenic Therapy or (Autogenic Training as it used to be called) is simple technique that allows you to put yourself into a state of very profound relaxation.
Q: Isn’t that like meditation?
A: Yes it is similar to meditation in many ways. One major difference between Autogenic Therapy (AT) and meditation, is that it is completely non-religious and unlike most forms of meditation is not even related to any religion or religious belief.
Q: So how does it work?
A: It’s amazingly simple. We know what physical sensations are experienced by people in deep effective meditation. So we teach people (who may not have had experience of meditation) to get comfortable and then suggest to their bodies that they are experiencing the same sensations felt by people in deep meditative relaxation. Doing this effectively puts you into a very profound relaxed state.
Q: If it’s that simple, can’t I just teach it to myself from a book?
A: Well it is simple, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to learn and that you won’t have a lot of questions to ask while you are learning. The British Autogenic Society firmly encourages you to learn from a qualifed teacher and actively discourages people from writing self-help books on the subject. Even the author of just such a book admits that it’s much better to learn from a qualified teacher!
Q: How many lessons do I need to have to learn AT?
A: An Autogenic Course comprises 8-12 lessons depending on the teacher. Each lesson lasts 45 – 60 minutes.
Q: Can I learn it in a group?
A: Yes, groups are a good and economical way to learn AT. The length of a group session tends to be 2 hours and the size of a group is 8 or less.
Q: How long has Autogenics been around?
A: About 80 years. But of course the physical, mental and even spiritual benefits of meditations have been known for thousands of years. Autogenics is a highly
Q: What does the medical profession think of Autogenic Therapy?
A: Interestingly, Autogenic Therapy (AT), unlike most forms of complementary medicine, has only ever been praised by the orthodox medical profession. Even Prof. Edzard Ernst (a professor of Complementary Medicine) but vicious critic of homeopathy and other forms of alternative medicine) has written glowingly about Autogenic Therapy.
Q: Can I get Autogenic Therapy on the NHS?
A: Yes you can, but unfortunately the provision of Autogenic Therapy on the NHS is not widespread. It’s available at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital. All you need is a referral letter from your GP.
Q: If it’s simple and effective why isn’t it more available?
A: It’s hard to answer that. I’ve never heard any doctor or patient say anything other than praise for AT. In addition, most
Q: Can I speak to you before making an appointment?
A: Certainly. I think people are entitled to ask a few questions before consulting a homeopathic doctor who will ask you all sorts of questions. You are welcome to phone me on my mobile for short conversation. Obviously it will not be viable for me to listen to the entire story of your illness on the phone or give any guarantee of success but I will be more than happy to answer a few questions that haven’t been addressed here. My telephone number is: +44 (7956) 870 951. If I’m consulting at the time, please leave a message and I’ll get back to you. Alternatively feel free to email me.
