Doctor patient relationships are very important and are seen to have changed a great deal over the years. Many people long to get back to the traditional idea of the family doctor, where he knew all about their home-life as he treated the whole family and thus had almost a personal involvement with his patients. However, doctors are now seen as impersonal, just prescribing drugs rather than finding out if there may be a deeper cause to the problem. This is one of the reasons that people are turning to alternative medicine where homeopathic doctors are looking further into the mind and lives of patients by exploring doctor patient relationships, rather than just prescribing drugs.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a treatment for mental conditions through talking to the patient and trying to uncover the problems in the mind. This is an alternative to simply giving the patient drugs; it attempts to get deeper into the problem. Body psychotherapy is an extension of psychotherapy and takes into account the complexity of interactions between the body and the mind.

Therapies such as chiropractic, craniosacral, auditory integration, psychotherapy, and biofeedback are fine to pursue along with homeopathy. Once the correct homeopathic medicine has been given, many patients find that they no longer need to follow strict allergy rotation diets, receive desensitization injections, take mega doses of numerous vitamins and minerals, and use other therapies aimed at treating individual symptoms.

Although psychotherapy is helpful it is very understandable that individuals want to try anything that has the possibility of helping them, but using too many therapies, conventional or alternative, at the same time can make it very difficult to discern what effect each specific therapy is having.

However the role of psychotherapy in determining the correct homeopathic treatment is very useful. When a person receives the correct homeopathic medicine, he knows it. She feels an improvement in energy, physical ailments, concentration, attitude, and creativity. Once he feels so much better, she generally no longer needs lots of other therapies.

Neuro linguistic programming/NLP

Neuro-Linguistic programming, otherwise known as NLP, studies the way humans view the world in an attempt to find the thoughts and behaviours that limit us. When these limitations are recognised it is possible to get rid of them and allow humans to live without these restrictions.

Psychology

Psychology is a science of the nature and functions of the human soul and mind. Psychologists seek to discover how the human mind works through experiments and studies. Through determining the workings of the mind, they can help understand the workings of the body in relation to it.

Psychology can play a vital role in determining the homeopathic treatment of a patient. Analytical Psychology and Homeopathy both take into consideration the defense mechanisms of the organs and the mental symptoms. Both acknowledge the importance of defense mechanisms in maintaining a certain energy, and in blocking energy in the body and the mind. The release of unhealthy defense mechanisms by a slow ‘working through’ enhances the patient’s mental and physical energy, re-establishing the vital force by regulating the homeostatic of being and mind. As Dr. Trevor Cook says:

‘Research indicates that feelings and experiences change us even at a cellular level. Mind and body constantly interact and influences one another. Physicians therefore must be conversant with biological, psychological and sociological factors, since holistic medicine accepts that all these systems influence one another.’

Humanistic psychology

Humanistic psychology looks at the human spirit and studies the values, intentions and meaning as elements of a conscious existence. Behavioural and social sciences influence a persons mind and spirit. It is helpful to have an understanding of these influences when practising holistic medicine. Humanistic psychology will help with holistic medicine, as healing the mind is as important as healing the body.

Studies have shown that humanistic psychology acknowledges the mind is strongly influenced by determining forces in society and in the unconscious, and that some of these are negative and destructive. Humanistic psychology nevertheless emphasizes the independent dignity and worth of human beings and their conscious capacity to develop personal competence and self respect. This value orientation has led to the development of therapies to facilitate personal and interpersonal skills and to enhance the quality of life.

Color psychology

Color psychology looks at colors and their subliminal meanings. It is said that you can find out a lot about a person based on the colors they wear or like and the colors they will pick in certain situations. Therefore, color psychology an alternative medicine in the sense that through several tests involving color it will be possible to determine someone’s instinctual feelings on a topic as well as providing a character analysis.

Homeopaths use color psychology to determine a patient’s reaction to situations and therefore their character. A vital part of homeopathic treatment is to discover the nature of the patient so the correct natural remedies can be chosen. Homeopath Dr Brian Kaplan uses the art of homeopathic conversation and makes connections with color psychology to determine the appropriate homeopathic remedies for the patient.
