In this timely publication, Dr Brian Kaplan, medical doctor and internationally renowned homeopath and teacher, shares his insights into how to create and improve the most crucial factor in the practice of homeopathy – the bond of understanding between practitioner and patient.

In this personal and passionately argued book, Dr Kaplan traces his journey away from the mechanistic world of conventional medicine towards the empathetic, person-centred philosophy of homeopathy. He explains the unique approach of this increasingly respected alternative medicine, explores the ideas and philosophies of its pioneers, and provides reasoned advice, based on more than two decades of committed practice and study, on how to fulfil its huge potential as a healing art.

The Homeopathic Conversation is a must-read for practitioners, teachers, students, patients and anyone else with a serious interest in homeopathy.

“Dr Brian Kaplan is a passionate teacher who builds on his insights from his clinical work and courageously and entertainingly shares his journey with all who listen.”– Dr David Owen, former president, Faculty of Homeopathy .”

A Practical Handbook for the Health Care Professional.
Rosemary A. Payne

Churchill Livingstone, 1995.
ISBN 0-443-04933-5

It has been well documented that stress plays an important part in the causation and aggravation of both physical and mental illness. From as early as 1956 researchers such as Hans Selye have illustrated the influence of stress on our health with graphs, diagrams and poignant and acclaimed articles. Lists have even been produced ranking various life events in the amount of stress they produce.

In addition certain illnesses such as peptic ulcer, irritable bowel syndrome, asthma and many others have for many years been known by the medical profession to be severely aggravated, if not caused, by stress in many people. As the author points out, studies have shown that 80% of modern diseases are initiated by stress and over 75% of GP consultations are about stress-related illnesses. The widespread prescription of tranquillisers to deal with stress over the past few decades is well known and recently the side effects and addictive qualities of these medications has caused concern among doctors and patients alike.

A plethora of books and audiotapes on various ‘How to relax’ methods has been available for many years. The great majority of these are directed at the layman and to be found in the ‘Self Help’ section at book shops. Most of the literature claims with some justification that it is demonstrably possible to off-load stress by simple techniques that are quite easy to learn. The positive effects of the regular practice of such techniques on many illnesses have been well established. From this it would seem obvious that there is a good case for making the teaching of some of these methods a major part of any health service. It would seem logical that if stress is at the root of three quarters of consultations in general practice, that teaching patients stress-releasing and stress-proofing techniques would be at the core of modern Western medical practice. Sadly this is not the case.

The author takes us through a thorough theoretical background and then presents the history, practical application, potential benefits and pitfalls of the different relaxation methods which she has divided into two categories; physical and mental. This is a little surprising as all relaxation techniques are holistic in that they claim to have therapeutic effects on the body, mind and even spirit.

The physical methods discussed comprise: Jacobson’s progressive relaxation, Bernstein & Borkovec’s modified version, Madder’s release-only, Ost’s applied relaxation, Poppen’s behavioural relaxation training, the Mitchell method, the Alexander technique (a controversial inclusion as most Alexander teachers would not regard themselves as teachers of a relaxation techniques), differential relaxation, stretching, exercise, and breathing methods.

The psychological methods discussed consist of: self-awareness, imagery, goal-directed visualisation, Autogenic Training, meditation and Benson’s relaxation response.

The history and theory of each method are well presented but the practical description of the technique varies. In ‘Goal-directed visualisation’ an impressive technique for giving up smoking is described in detail. In the section on Autogenic Training, whilst the theory and history of this important method are excellent, the practical description of how it is done is confusing and not an accurate description of how Autogenic Training is taught in the UK.

The author addresses the book to health care professionals and suggests that ‘GPs and psychologists may find it useful’. I think that its formal layout and immaculate referencing make it ideal reading for medical students and GP trainees. Previous works covering the same territory are either not as comprehensive or not written in a style suitable to be a textbook. She also addresses it to the lay person but I feel it will be an unsatisfying and not very relaxing read for the average reader who would do better to buy a self-help book on a specific relaxation technique.

This is a unique addition to the literature in that it gives detailed descriptions of a great variety of relaxation techniques in one volume. It is ideal for the doctor or health professional wanting to learn more about these techniques in order to be able to make appropriate referrals of patients who might benefit from a relaxation technique. It would also be invaluable for the doctor or health practitioner wanting to teach a relaxation technique to his or her patients but not knowing where to start. Thus it is a pity that a list of institutions teaching or providing teacher training in the various techniques is not included as an appendix.

The prevention and treatment of physical and mental illness by reducing stress with relaxation is the very essence of the holistic paradigm in medicine. The regular practice of a relaxation technique empowers patients to be responsible for their health and is capable of transforming their lives as well as their illnesses. This book, written in the style of a professional textbook, is capable of making health professionals aware of this possibility for themselves and their patients.

Foreword to 1st edition 1994.

by Dr Brian Kaplan.

No rational person can doubt the fantastic advances made this century by medical science. Potentially fatal diseases including pneumonia, meningitis and tuberculosis are now treated fairly routinely. The discovery of insulin has brought relief to the previously debilitating disease of diabetes. Transplant surgery has given life and mobility to thousands. Demons such as syphilis and Hodgkin’s disease have simply been put to the sword.

Nevertheless, many chronic diseases such as eczema, migraine, colitis and arthritis, to name a few, remain very difficult to treat. In spite of this, orthodox medicine, greatly aided by the technological revolution, remains the first choice for most people in the Western world. And notwithstanding great victories in its war against disease, a murmur of dissent is being heard more and more frequently amongst its recipients. Perhaps the reason for this is that as conventional medicine journeys further and further down the electron microscope of scientific discovery, it is losing sight of an ancient healing art. The art of therapeutic listening has sadly been sidelined as the science becomes dominated by deterministic thinking. Wonderful things can be discovered by magnifying diseased tissue, but we are in danger of examining the cells of the tissue and neglecting the patient to whom they belong. By all means, let us look down microscopes at cells, but let us not forget to step back and look at the whole world that these cells occupy. The patient as a whole, personal history, relationships, family, job and position in the community may all have tremendous influence in the causation and perpetuation of disease.

It is ironic that most doctors are all too aware of these influences. No medically trained person would deny that stress and anxiety can lead to to a stomach ulcer. And yet the mainstay of the medical treatment of ulcers is by drugs that suppress the secretion of acid in the stomach. Dentists often note the deterioration of gums after a severe shock or disappointment but are trained only to deal with the gums and teeth and therefore often feel powerless to deal with the emotional environment that depressed the immune system and allowed the tissue changes to take place.

For Peter Chappell the psychophysiological changes that allow illnesses to develop and prevent the natural healing ability of the body from curing them, are all important. In this honest and outspoken book, he has drawn not only on his extensive experience as a homeopathic practitioner but also on his own life and personal exploration with psychotherapy.

It is his view that the susceptibility to disease is usually created by a severe emotional shock to the system. This shock may occur in early childhood, as many a Freudian or Kleinian would concur, or even in utero, since emotional trauma to the mother can affect her physiology profoundly and may be transmitted to the foetus. Of course, as physicians, we may never discover these traumas which are often well hidden and protected, buried in the unconscious mind, all too painful for the patient himself to remember. However, we have a better chance of uncovering these events if we remain silent and allow our patients to speak into a space of compassion and understanding. Peter Chappell has clearly made it his business to make the time for creating such an atmosphere within his practice. The case studies used make for compelling reading. The expert classical homeopath is much like a detective as he vigilantly searches for clues in his patient’s life history that could lead to a successful prescription. These vignettes will surely be described by the medical profession as ‘anecdotal evidence’ and this is true. The author’s theory that deep emotional trauma can produce susceptibility to disease is not scientific since it can be neither proved nor disproved. Nevertheless the stories have an unmistakable ring of authenticity, and most homeopaths would agree that their remedies, prescribed for the whole person, are capable of producing profound physiological and psychological changes in their patients.

The homeopathic approach to the patient varies between two poles. On the one hand the practitioner prescribes for the presenting illness while on the other he listens in silence waiting for the patient to reveal the true centre of his problem.

Peter Chappell leans heavily towards the latter approach and this book is a useful contribution to the literature on classical, whole person orientated homeopathy.

Homeopathic remedies come from every part of the world and from all the kingdoms of nature – mineral, vegetable, animal and microbe. They include strong poisons such as arsenic, the venom of deadly snakes and the products of disease, as well as harmless substances like sand and charcoal, and herbs whose healing properties have been handed down through generations and are celebrated in history and legend.

Dr Douglas Gibson (1888-1977) was a distinguished homeopath who recognised the importance of knowing the materia medica in depth. These studies of remedies, first published in the British Homeopathic Journal over the period 1963-1977, combine the panorama of each remedy with a faithful description of the mental and physical symptoms it elicits from a sensitive prover. The whole remedy is indeed used to treat the whole patient.

His studies are edited here for publication in book form. They differ from any previously published materia medica in the uniquely wide range of insights that are brought to bear on each remedy. They will be of great practical value, and a source of pleasure and stimulation, to the homeopathic clinician.

Dr. Gibson studied medicine at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, subsequently taking the Edinburgh FRCS. After many years as a medical missionary in China he came to study homeopathy at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, where he became first a Member and then a Fellow of the Faculty of Homeopathy. Dr Marianne Harling and Dr Brian Kaplan are practising homeopathic doctors.
